The separate spheres is the socially-constructed and culturally-perpetuated difference between and man's domain versus a woman's. A man's sphere often consists of going out and getting a job, whereas the woman's sphere is often staying in the house, doing household work and taking care of the kids. A man's sphere could overlap with a woman's because he had a home life and could still control the woman's sphere. A theory is that the women's sphere of staying in the household came after the Industrial Revolution.
